Middle School

Early adolescence (the 11-14 year old) is characterized by rapid physiological and psychological changes. This is when children are increasingly able to form abstract concepts, to understand cause and effect, and have a strong desire to ‘take hold of’ and conquer the world around them. Peers become ever more influential at this age, so it’s an important time to develop effective interpersonal and social skills. Boys Time and Girls Time is a weekly class for our middle school students to be real with each other, develop self-confidence, and explore a range of developmentally relevant topics. Grade 6
Sixth graders have a desire for autonomy, and an increased curiosity.
Learning about properties of the earth and Roman history, forms the basis of lawfulness, connection and compassion.

Academics, arts and activities include:

  • Language arts: word origins and roots, aspects of Latin grammar
  • Math: business math, geometric drawing, presentation of data
  • Science: mineralogy, physics, thermodynamics, optics, astronomy
  • Roman and Medieval history; European geography
  • Cybercivics, online safety and ethics
  • Woodworking, carving, pottery, archery, habitat restoration
  • Boys Time or Girls Time

 
Grade 7
Seventh graders have a desire for expanded perspective and a wider worldview.
Learning about ratios, algebraic concepts and perspective drawing forms the basis of inclusiveness, balance and social responsibility.

Academics, arts and activities include:

  • Language arts: essay writing, editing, advanced grammar, poetry
  • Math: ratio and proportion, angles, algebraic concepts and processes
  • Science: inorganic chemistry, sound, Doppler effect
  • Renaissance period up to Industrial age, world geography
  • Cybercivics, online safety and ethics
  • Woodworking, carving, pottery, archery, habitat restoration
  • Boys Time or Girls Time

 
Grade 8
Eighth graders have a desire for reasoning and conceptual thinking.
Learning about the Golden ratio, history and current events forms the basis of critical thinking and sense of belonging.

Academics, arts and activities include:

  • Language arts: report and essay writing, poetry, writing style and voice
  • Math: geometry, Golden mean, factoring binomials and polynomials
  • Science: organic chemistry, human physiology, physics, meteorology
  • Industrial Revolution, American history, current world events
  • Cybercivics, online safety and ethics
  • Woodworking, carving, pottery, archery, habitat restoration
  • Boys Time or Girls Time
